Surf Dogs

Back with a splash is the Kitchener-Waterloo Humane Society’s (KWHS) 6th Annual Surf Dogs! On Sunday, September 7th 2008, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. the pool is open to only your furry friend. Surf Dogs is held at Bingemans Wave Pool and, rain or shine, the dogs love practising their doggie paddle in the waves…yes, the waves are turned on! Surf Dogs helps strengthen the pet/owner relationship and gives people and their dogs the opportunity to socialize with others! The Kitchener-Waterloo Humane Society depends on these events to strengthen our relationship with the community and to generate extra funds for the orphaned animals at the Centre.

University of Waterloo Homecoming Family Carnival

A staple of UW's Homecoming festivities, the Family Carnival is back and better than ever. Dinosaurs Alive!
When? July 1, 2008 - January 11, 2009 (The Children's Museum will be closed from September 2 - 9 for annual maintenance)
What?
Entertaining and educational, this 6000 square foot exhibition featuring life-sized animatronic, moving and roaring dinosaurs takes visitors into prehistoric times! After touring through the foliage and faux dino-scenery, the overall experience and aura is creating with skeletons, fossil displays and dig sites that demonstrate how bones are found and excavated. To complement the visuals, bones, fossils and life-sized recreations, woven throughout the remaining portion of the exhibit are a series of multimedia and static stations that add depth, communication and interpretation that serve to educate visitors on the raw facts of dinosaurs, their life and times and help complete the overall experience of the Mesozoic period.

The Cognitive Development Lab at the University of Waterloo is currently recruiting children and parents who are interested in taking part in a study that looks at how well preschoolers (ages 3 to 4 yrs) understand statements from others. Learning About School-aged Children's Communication Skills
What?
The Cognitive Development Lab at the University of Waterloo is currently conducting a study looking at communication in children with and without ADHD, and are seeking children between the ages of 6 - 9, and their parent(s) to participate. The study involves a 1 hour session at the University of Waterloo which includes: 1)Parents: filling out 3 short questionnaires 2) Children: a communication game, a measure of their vocabulary, and a reaction task on a computer. The tasks are formatted like games so that it is a fun experience for the children, and they will receive a small toy (e.g., a ball or pencil) to take home as a thank you. What?
Child development researchers at Wilfrid Laurier University are conducting studies to find out more about children's memory. We are looking for children aged 7-8 years old to participate in the current study. Children do fun activities, such as playing games, followed by a simple memory task. Parent and Baby Fit Swim
What?
An energizing water exercise program that allows a parent (or another adult) to enjoy a work out with the baby in the shallow end of the pool. While the adult is exercising, the child is held or supported in the water - the adult will jog, stretch and tone for 45 minutes. The last 15 minutes is open swim for the participants to socialize and enjoy their child and the water. Child must be in swim diaper or suitable swim attire. Child will be kept within arms reach throughout class. Participants need not know how to swim. Only one child per adult permitted.
