Fanshawe 1812: The Invasion of Upper Canada

A Fanshawe Pioneer Village Signature Event - Dispatch received from the 1st (Royal Scots) Regiment, Grenadier Company: “Citizens…His Majesty’s ground forces will make an aggressive attempt to reclaim the territories of Western Upper Canada. It is our intention to garrison our forces at the Pioneer Village of Fanshawe and choose this ground to halt the advance of the American forces. Beware of spies in your midst.” Which side will you support? Presented with the support of the Upper Canada Military Re-Enactment Society.

Harvest Home Festival
When? Sunday, October 5 from 12 to 4pm
What? The Harvest Home festival is a celebration of the county's rich rural agricultural past - we have the sights and sounds of tractors, threshers, the feel of grain, animals, the taste and smell of fresh produce and the vision of our rural location. We are planning the following activities: old fashioned threshing & ploughing, vintage tractor display, 'Buy Local! Buy Fresh!' Marketplace, entertainment by the Puppets Elora, blacksmithing, Jolly Friars Chip Wagon, pony rides, wagon rides. Outside the museum visitors can wander through a variety of demonstrations including sheep shearing, log squaring, blacksmithing and rope making. Shop at the Buy Local! Buy Fresh! Marketplace and take home some excellent farm fresh produce and products from Wellington County. Bring your cooler! Also view the popular display of antique and vintage tractors and farm equipment. Last year over 40 tractors were on display, making for an impressive sight on the hill! Plaques will be awarded for the Oldest Tractor and the People’s Choice Award. Inside the museum there will be many more demonstrations including; sausage making, cider pressing, quilting, and flax processing.

4th Annual Cambridge Breastfeeding Challenge

Mayor's 2008 Oktoberfest Lucheon

Erntefest – Harvest Festival
When? October 10 - 19, 2008 (Monday - Saturday: 10am to 5pm; Sunday: 1 - 5pm)
What? The Joseph Schneider Haus, Kitchener’s oldest Mennonite homestead, celebrates the harvest or “Ernte” with a flurry of activity. For 10 days, the seasonal tasks of a Mennonite farming family will be performed as they were in the 1850's. Domestic duties such as schnitzing, preserving, pickling and flax processing will prepare the busy household for winter. The bakehouse and drying house will be fired up throughout the week.

What? Bring the little ones out to experience the fun in our kitchen! At our 'Bring Your Child' Sessions, the kids are by your side helping to scoop, mix and assemble your meals. Thanksgiving Day Parade
When? Monday, October 13 @ 8:30am
What? Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest features one of the most spectacular Thanksgiving Day Parades in Canada. Join over 300,000 Fest-goers as they line King Street on Thanksgiving morning, eagerly awaiting the colourful floats, clowns and award winning marching bands from Canada and the United States. The Parade route, lined with an enthusiastic audience covers 5 km from King and Erb Streets in Waterloo to King and Cedar streets in Kitchener. If you can't join us in person, the CTV network broadcasts the Parade nationwide.

The Virtues Project
When? This is a 2-day workshop on Thursday, October 16 & Friday, October 17 from 8:30am to 4pm
What? The Virtues Project is a framework for living the best life we can and helping others do the same. It offers 5 strategies (Speak the Language of the Virtues, Recognize Teachable Moments, Set Clear Boundaries, Honor the Spirit, Offer the Art of Companioning) that we can use to enhance communication and build the strength of our family. Participants will receive an opportunity for personal development, tools to empower themselves and their children, skills to address the spiritual dimension in counseling, family life and organizational development and eligibility to attend The Virtues Project Facilitator Training.

When Little Lucy meets the members of the Brass Family, can you help her decide which instrument to play? Will it be the triumphant trumpet, the noble French horn, the sliding trombone or the gigantic tuba? From high to low, soft to loud, old to new, the beautiful sounds made by these instruments will delight young audiences.

Wishmaker Walk for Wishes
What? This event will bring you up-close and personal with Wish Families who have benefited from the Children's Wish Foundation. Our “Wishmaker” Walk has had many Wish Families willingly come forward who want to come out and share their wish pictures and stories with you, on a one-to-one basis. Fall Fair at Trillium Waldorf School
What? Our fall and spring fairs offer a great opportunity to explore our school; experience our community in action; take part in creative and fun-filled activities; learn about Waldorf Education, and enjoy some simple refreshments. Dinosaurs Alive!
When? Until January 11, 2009
What? Entertaining and educational, this 6000 square foot exhibition featuring life-sized animatronic, moving and roaring dinosaurs takes visitors into prehistoric times! After touring through the foliage and faux dino-scenery, the overall experience and aura is creating with skeletons, fossil displays and dig sites that demonstrate how bones are found and excavated. To complement the visuals, bones, fossils and life-sized recreations, woven throughout the remaining portion of the exhibit are a series of multimedia and static stations that add depth, communication and interpretation that serve to educate visitors on the raw facts of dinosaurs, their life and times and help complete the overall experience of the Mesozoic period.

Learning About School-aged Children's Communication Skills
What? The Cognitive Development Lab at the University of Waterloo is currently conducting a study looking at communication in children with and without ADHD, and are seeking children between the ages of 6 - 9, and their parent(s) to participate. The study involves a 1 hour session at the University of Waterloo which includes: 1)Parents: filling out 3 short questionnaires 2) Children: a communication game, a measure of their vocabulary, and a reaction task on a computer. The tasks are formatted like games so that it is a fun experience for the children, and they will receive a small toy (e.g., a ball or pencil) to take home as a thank you. What? This 6-week stoneware pottery course lets children come and get dirty, while laughing and playing.
