Featured Activities & Outings for January
      There is plenty to do for those who like to take advantage of everything that winter has to. Skating, tobogganing, snowshoeing, downhill and cross-country skiing, tubing or just hiking and taking in the winter scenery are some of the activities for the true winter enthusiast. Visit the kwkids.com family outing & activity guide for many ideas.

If you prefer staying away from the cold, there are exciting ways to spend this winter inside in KW. Here are some ideas:

  • Kid’s Hop! Concerts at the Kitchener Market on Tuesday mornings (11am – Noon) are a great way to work up your kids’ appetite for a nice meal afterwards at one of the multi-cultural eateries.

  • Let your creative juices flow at one of the fun programs at Luci’s Mudhouse or just drop in for some relaxing and creative time to paint your own pottery! Some might be really excited about the Almost a Sleepover program where parents can drop off their 5+ aged children for a couple of hours while enjoying a night out. There is plenty to do in Uptown Waterloo!

  • An informative hands-on workshop for parents on how to prepare healthy snacks for their kids is taking place at George Street Naturopathic Medicine on January 19th. To learn more or sign up, please contact Dr. Joanna Thiessen at 519-575-6016. Check out the kwkids.com parent workshop page for other exciting ways to broaden your horizons!

  • A new children’s bookstore for gently used books has opened inside the Princess Twin Cinema. Run by Darlene, a former librarian, Read for your Life Bookstore is a place to bring your kids for Read-Aloud Storytime any time or for other organized programs for children 0 +.

  • Discovering Chimpanzees: The Remarkable World of Jane Goodall exhibit will be opening at the Children’s Museum on January 25, 2008. The Children’s Museum will also be hosting an evening with Jane Goodall at the Centre in the Square on May 12, 2008.

  • Change and evolution are inevitable. Bring your kids to experience how the caterpillar from The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle transforms into a beautiful butterfly on stage at the Centre in The Square on Saturday, January 5th or at the River Run Centre in Guelph on Sunday.

  • The North Waterloo Farm Toy Show celebrates its 20th Anniversary this coming Saturday, January 5th, 2008 by relocating to Rim Park, Manulife Building, 2nd floor, Forbes Family Hall from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm. The Children’s Wish Foundation is again the main recipient of the event with proceeds from the live Charity Auction that begins at 1:00 pm.
For these and many other fun programs and events, please visit the kwkids.com calendar! Let’s have fun this winter!

Kwkids.com is pleased to welcome Steve from Bentley Financial as our Pro for the Family Finances & RESP page. Browse the Q&As, ask your own question online or contact Steve for complimentary no-obligation advice any time. Every month Steve will present a relevant question and answer.

What’s New for Registered Education Savings Plans (RESPs) in 2008?

Families can save more money for their children's education in 2008. The following changes have been implemented:
  • The maximum contribution to an RESP has risen to $50,000 per child;
  • The $4,000 annual limit has been eliminated;
  • The 20% Canada Education Savings Grant (CESG) has increased to $500. A deposit of $2,500 now generates the new maximum grant;
  • If there is unused grant room, the maximum CESG available for one year is now $1,000;
  • The lifetime CESG limit remains at $7,200; and
  • Rules on Education Assistance Payments (EAPs) have been eased for qualifying part-time programs. They now require at least 12 hours a month be spent on courses to qualify.
