Join in the fun twice a month to learn about the importance of reading to your new child and to hear stories, play games and sing songs. Reading to your baby early and often sets the stage for later reading success. According the 1985 American National Commission on Reading, reading aloud to children is "the single most important intervention that parents can make in ensuring their child’s later reading success."

Audition Call for Peter Pan

What? Presented by the KW Children's Drama Workshop. Students take part in acting out a story spontaneously as it is being told. Christmas in the Village
When? Wednesday, December 2 and Thursday, December 3, 2009 between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m.
What? The Waterloo Region Children’s Safety Village will be once again hosting their “Annual Christmas in the Village”. It will be decorated for the festive season and will be open to the public to come view this winter wonderland. Throughout the evening carols will be sung by local children’s choirs. Santa Claus will be there to hear all the children’s wishes, but keep an eye out for the Grinch. Hot refreshments and cookies will be served. There will be lots to see and do at this family friendly event. There will be a silent auction for those who would like to do some early Christmas shopping.
How Much? All are welcome and admission is just $1. Additional donations support the Children’s Safety Village and are always welcome and appreciated.

FREE Horse Drawn Trolley Rides

What? FREE horse-drawn trolley rides thru UpTown Waterloo and Waterloo Park. Trolley rides begin at 5:30pm and while FREE, will require a ticket to board as space is limited. Tickets will be available as of 5:15 pm the day of the event at Centre Court inside The Shops at Waterloo Town Square. The trolley boards on Willis Way between King and Caroline Streets. The Annual Santa Shuffle

Festive Family Day

Cloth Diaper Workshop
When? Saturday, December 5, 2009 at 9am
What? Are you a parent-to-be considering using cloth diapers, but you just don't know where to start? Are you a parent of a child in single-use diapers, and you want a better alternative? Are you a parent of a child in cloth diapers, and you have some questions about your current diapering system? Then this workshop is for you! This workshop is an opportunity for you and your significant other to view cloth diapers 'in real life', and to ask any questions you might have. The following issues will be addressed: 1) the benefits of using cloth diapers (covering environmental issues, health issues, and cost savings); 2) overview of the basic types of diapers (prefolds, fitteds, pocket diapers, all-in-ones) and how to use them; 3) overview of what you need to get started; 4) storing / washing diapers; 5) cloth diapering at night; 6) cloth diapering on the go. *** It will be an informal, entertaining hour, and we would love to have you join us! Bring Your Child Session at SupperWorks!
When? Saturdays: December 5, 12 & 19, 2009 @ 10:30am and Thursday, December 17, 2009 at 1pm (Please pre-register at least 4 days in advance.)
What? Bring the little ones out to experience the fun in our kitchen! At our 'Bring Your Child' Sessions, the kids are by your side helping to scoop, mix and assemble your meals. Enjoy coffee, juice and nut-free treats while you prepare your meals together. The parents say their kids just love eating the dishes they made themselves here at SupperWorks. It will take a about an hour to make 6 full sized meals. Each meal serves 4-6 people, and can be split into 12 meals that serve 2-3 people. Bring home 6 full sized meals for $168.

"Everything Beaver" & "Hooked on Waterloo Region"
When? Hooked on Waterloo Region goes from now until Nov. 18 and Everything Beaver is displayed from now until Dec. 23/09.
What? Hear Ye! Hear He! Woodside welcomes families to our national historic site. Come and view two special exhibits. "Everything Beaver" is a display of beaver items from the private collection of Sherwood Hagey. See a stuffed beaver named "Jacques" proudly gnawing on a stump in our parlour. Make a beaver crown. "Hooked on Waterloo Region" will showcase 25 original art work by members of the Kitchener-Waterloo Rug Hooking Guild. Get your children to see if they can name the famous places and highlights of Waterloo Region depicted in these beautifully hand-made art pieces. Woodside is open daily from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Walk-In Counselling Clinic
What? The Walk-In Counselling Clinic serves two purposes: 1) as the “access” or intake point for most of our counselling services, and 2) at the client’s request, to provide a one and half hour single session to determine the nature of the problem and to leave with a plan to address the issue(s). Referral Process: No referral process is required for our Walk-In Counselling Clinic. Simply come to our office on Thursdays during our Walk-In Counselling Clinic hours. We endeavour to have clients seen as quickly as possible, and work on a first-come, first-served basis. If, however, a large influx of individuals come in late in the day we may have to ask people to return the following week. Wait times also vary according to the arrivals of clients.

Learning About Children's Communication Skills
What? The Cognitive Development Lab at the University of Waterloo is currently recruiting children and parents who are interested in taking part in a study that looks at how well preschoolers (ages 3 to 4 yrs) understand statements from others. The study takes about 45 minutes and will take place in our lab located at the University of Waterloo. Your child will participate in communication tasks that are formatted like games so that it is a fun experience for him/her. As a thank you, your child will receive a toy to take home. Help us learn how children learn!
What? Spend an hour watching your child learn and having fun at the University of Waterloo’s Centre for Child Studies! The Centre has been studying children’s language learning and thinking for over 10 years. We are always looking for new parents and children to take part in our studies which are like games and stories, and children receive a certificate and small gift at the end. A visit to the Centre usually takes about an hour and siblings are welcome. Free parking is available beside our building. Our studies have been widely cited in the media and thousands of parents and children have taken part. Creative Drama for 3-4.5 years

What? Presented by the KW Children's Drama Workshop. A excellent opportunity for your young child to join others to explore and experience their natural joy of using creativity, imagination and their bodies to explore the world around them. Participants will develop body awareness, rhythm, appreciation of music, and literature. Various forms of stories, folk tales, poems and plays will be explored in this action pack fast paced program. Creativity is a strong base for this program and through using music, movement, scarves, instruments and each others imagination your youngster will develop early performance basics in the most fun way. A small informal presentation for participants will be held on the last day of classes.

What? Presented by the KW Children's Drama Workshop. This course will help your young budding Actor develop theatre skills and stage craft through exploring basic acting and creative drama concepts. This class focuses on using improvisation, characterization & self-expression in speech, body and facial expressions. Teamwork and co-operation with others is emphasized throughout the session. Creative Drama will be explored by using music, story-telling, movement and play-acting. This is a great course for those who also would like to participate in future Productions to gain confidence, skills and stage awareness. A small informal presentation for participants will be held on the last day of classes.

What? Presented by the KW Children's Drama Workshop. An action packed course aimed to stimulate these young spirits. Children will further develop their skills in speech arts, basic dramatic play, improv, story telling, and imagination. By using theatre games, stories, music, self-expression and props, your child will develop confidence, body & spatial awareness, emotional awareness, a positive self – esteem and further appreciation of theatrical arts. The instructor will gently nurture the shy child and join in with the excited child and bring them together in a small informal final presentation on the last day.

Creative Drama for Grades 3-5 (8-10 Years)
When? 2009 10-week Winter Session: Fridays 6:45-8:00 pm – 10 weeks December 4-18th; January 15-March 5th (no program Feb 18th) $90
What? Presented by the KW Children's Drama Workshop. Emphasis in the course will be on learning to develop characters through improvisation. They will explore developing story telling from beginning to end using role playing and improvisation. Line study and stage movement will encourage self confidence. This is a course that is designed to introduce drama to youth using various mediums and helping them develop body & spatial awareness, positive self esteem and a further appreciation of the dramatic / theatrical arts. A small informal presentation for participants will be held on the last day of classes.

Audition Preparation Course 8 +
When? 2009 10-week Winter Session: Fridays 8 - 9 pm – 10 weeks December 4-18th; January 15-March 5th (no program Feb 18th) $80
What? Presented by the KW Children's Drama Workshop. Never auditioned before? Want to build some audition skills and confidence? This on going course will help you do just that! From learning what to do and what not to do; to exploring “cold reads”; body awareness, vocal preparation and how to learn more about the show in which you want to audition for! This course will help you build your self esteem and also give you some tools to start your auditioning experiences. No final presentation for this course.
